Please tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from and how come you started river windsurfing?

My name is Florian Behringer. I'm born in small village near Karlsruhe/Germany not far away from beautiful Rhine River. When I was a young boy I once tried windsurfing on a holliday trip. After this first encounter it took several more years before I was finally infected by the windsurfing virus. When I was 19, my grandma supported me and bought my first windsurfing board. So I started my windsurfing career on a small lake. When I was experienced enough I followed some friends to nearby Rhine River and was pretty impressed by the great conditions and the local windsurfing community. By pushing each other we've learned a lot of new freestyle manovers and spend a great time on the water. Meanwhile I moved to Berlin to finish my study in politics and history.

You are a freestyle windsurfing addict. What's your attitude towards it?

I think freestyle will still make progress in future. It’s a perfect alternative for surfers who don’t live close to the sea with perfect wave-spots. Freestyle just works nearly everywhere. In addition I get a kick out of learning new moves and therefore the potential is almost unendingly. But it’s a bit sad what happens on the contest-level in Germany at the moment. In contrast to other countries in Germany freestyle has not the importance it could have. Especially for the DWC(German Windsurf Cup) it would be an enormous gain in prestige if the organizers would attribute more weight on freestyle and wave by giving these disciplines priority over Slalom and Formula. In addition they could integrate new spots in other parts of Germany. The spectators and sponsors would be happy about such a decision.

What's the sickest trick you can do?

In the last few months I’ve learned many switch moves, my main goal at the moment is to learn some new wave moves. I think the future (ponch into flaka) is probably the hardest trick I am learning at the moment, but I just nailed it a few times.

What kind of boards and sails do you prefer for Freestyle Windsurfing ?

Since 2 years I'm sponsored by Tabou and Gaastra, so my favorite freestyle gear is the Tabou Freestyle 110 which has about 104l and the 5,0 5.0 Maniac wave sail. I think a board around 100 liters is the best choice for moderate conditions with a windrange from 3 to 7 bft.

Your favorite playgrounds are?

Generally I prefer flat water for freestyling. Together with some small but steep ramps it is pure fun. At Rhine river my favourite spots are Trechtinshausen and Iffezheim. Meanwhile I surf most of the time at spots around the Saaler Bodden close to the Baltic Sea, where you can find quite good conditions. Even though it's always something special for me coming back to Rhine River.

Your latest magic moment on the water?

Definitely at Rhine during Christmas, when we had some really awesome sessions in Iffezheim. It was fucking cold with around 2 degrees, but as a compensation for that there was a nearly cloudless sky and strong wind. Besides , it was the only spot in Germany at this time having wind because of the local thermals. Ripping together with some old friends gave me an extra motivation.

Your plans for the near future ?

This year I will continue my study in Berlin. In spring, when I have vacation term, I plan to make a short trip to prepare myself for some freestyle competitions that I would like join in summer . And of course I intend to come back to the Rhine as often as possible…
